This information will help prevent an allergic reaction to the contrast dye you will receive during your scan. Sometimes, contrast dye (or contrast) is used in imaging scans to help your doctors see your organs better. Computed tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) use different kinds of contrast. In the past you had an allergic reaction to contrast that you got during a scan. You are having another scan that requires the same type of contrast. To prevent an allergic reaction, you will need to take a steroid medication before your scan. There are different medications that you can take to prevent an allergic reaction. Your doctor will tell you which one you need and give you a prescription for it. There are no drug interactions between Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and prednisone. In fact, these two medications are often used together for certain indications including allergic reactions. In addition, there are no drug interactions between Benadryl and methylprednisolone or prednisolone, two other steroids that are very similar to prednisone and used for the same indications. Below is additional information about prednisone and Benadryl. Antihistamines are widely used for self-care of allergy symptoms including runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, and itching of the nose, throat, or eyes. Benadryl may also be used for symptoms of the common cold, allergic reactions, occasional insomnia, and more. Because Benadryl is a first-generation antihistamine, it is more likely to cause sedation and drowsiness. Other first-generation antihistamines include Dramamine (dimenhydrinate), Chlor-Trimeton (chlorpheniramine), Tavist (clemastine), and Phenergan (promethazine), among others.

Benadryl and oral prednisone should not cause this type of reaction. I would be suspicious of some underlying condition causing the hives and the arthralgia (joint pains). Clearly, hives are a symptom of an immune system reaction. However, diffuse arthralgia can also be a symptom of an immunological response. Now, with this being said, there is some concern in this case. Since you wife has been on steroids and antihistamines and the arthralgia is presenting now, this could mean that her current regimen is not effective in managing or reducing her immunological response. This new symptom should be reported to her provider. This need to report is especially important if the cause for the hives was not identified. Also, please be cautious of any swelling of the face or throat and any symptoms of difficulty breathing. If you have additional questions, concerns, or would like to discuss this further, please let me know. Sominex is a brand name sleep aide that contains diphenhydramine. Diphenhydramine is also the active ingredient in Benadryl and Zzz Quil. Diphenhydramine is safe to take with prednisone, an oral corticosteroid. There is no listed or reported interaction between the two medications. Prednisone is well known to cause insomnia and related side effects including increased energy, anxiety and excitation, in as little as one dose. As such, many individuals look to over the counter (OTC) medications to help with sleep in the evening. Fortunately, as mentioned above, diphenhydramine is safe to use with prednisone and there are no safety issues taking both together.

Prednisone provides relief for inflamed areas of the body. It is used to treat a number of different conditions, such as inflammation (swelling), severe allergies, adrenal problems, arthritis, asthma, blood or bone marrow problems, endocrine problems, eye or vision problems, stomach or bowel problems, lupus, skin conditions, kidney problems, ulcerative colitis, and flare-ups of multiple sclerosis. Prednisone is a corticosteroid (cortisone-like medicine or steroid). It works on the immune system to help relieve swelling, redness, itching, and allergic reactions. iv had hives since the beginning of last December and they are absolutly MISSi RABLE!!! Iv been to my regular doc she had given me a steroid shot and pill thought i was allergic to something and had referred me to an immulologist. Later that evening my hives got worse so i just went to the hospital to get it checked out but that was pointless and waste of money i was told the same thing and the doc had given me another steroid shot which i had told her didn’t help earlier that day which is why i was there. abby I have had Chronic Pressure Urtcaria for almost two decades. The worst trigger is carrying plastic bags or a pile of boxes or where the seatbelt hits my neck. I ended up never sleeping at night having hot/cold sweats taking alot of antihistamines that felt like forever. There is a regimen you have to follow, that is why the Pred Pack is so simple. When I had an epidural for pain relief after a total knee, you could see where the tubing had been coiled on my back for more than 6 months. I would not recommend long term use of Benadryl especially since it seems ineffective. Did end up getting an appointment with an immulologist and skin test came out that i wasnt allergic to anything, and blood work was normal. I can imagine how disabling and frustrating this must be! I take Ranitidine 300mg and Hydroxyzine Pamoate 25mg every night before bed. It’s very difficult for me not to know the cause and just mask the symptoms with medication long term. Now i’am taking 2 180mg tablets of Allegra, Montelukast SOD, Ranitidine all TWICE a day and if i skip or if i’m late on a dose i start getting the hives really bad. Here is some information on chronic hives (urticaria), from Mayo Clinic: I found a few members who have discussed hives; please meet @lamerex4, @bluecinnamon, @kamuela, @dwead1, @debras, @cdavaine, @conniesgore, @amberpep, @suzieapples, @marigold, @sjthate, @lakemichigan1, @bcsurvivor2006, @upinatreehouse, @brendabirkman, @bettyann. When I get hives (normal sized ones) I take 2 or 3 Benadryl; but twice I have also had them that were the size of dinner plates …. I have been reading about Low Dose Naltrexone for my Fibromyalgia which is also autoimmune, so I’ve been wondering if it might also ‘cure’ the hives. I finally found relief when my allergist prescribed cyclosporine, I was on it for a year full strength and gradually decreased until I didn’t need it ant longer. Iam going to see an Indocrinologist early next week also. I cant stand it anymore just wondering if it is caused by an underlying disease? I can imagine how disabling and frustrating this must be! once when I got bitten by a juvenile black widow spider and the other time from a medication I was getting when I had my knee replacement. I still take zyrtech and Singulair, which is now keeping it under control.
